Hi, I’m Helen.
I began my writing career at the age of eleven when I started writing soppy poems in my diary and science-fiction short stories for school publications. I was a prolific reader, and I even cataloged my personal books. I guess that was a clue that I would later become a librarian and a writer!
I have a B.A. in English from Agnes Scott College, a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of South Carolina.
As a former children’s librarian and public library director, I saw first-hand how books can delight, amaze, and educate children and adults. I wanted to write nonfiction and historical fiction books that would delight and inspire readers.
I am experienced speaking to students, aviation organizations, civic groups, book clubs, and libraries.
I live in coastal North Carolina. I enjoy traveling, petting every dog I see during my daily walks, flying to airshows with my pilot husband and spending time with family and friends. I read British mysteries and watch British mysteries and crime shows. Surely everyone who lives in Midsomer has been murdered by now…
Research is one of my superpowers. My family would say that cooking is not.
